Quality Level D
(QL D) information comes primarily from existing utility records and is limited in terms of comprehensiveness. This level information is best suited for early design stage projects with minimal excavation planned.
Quality Level C
(QL C) involves surveying visible above-ground utility facilities, such as manholes, and correlating this information with existing utility records as discussed in “QL D” data. QL C information may be limited to prelim projects with little anticipated conflicts because it may not eliminate all inaccuracies.
Quality Level B
(QL B) is one of our primary SUE services and involves the use of surface geophysical techniques to determine the existence and horizontal position of underground utilities. Designating, as it is called, further compares utility records and surface topographical information to help reveal unrecorded lines, while two-dimensional mapping information may be obtained and sufficient to aiding the preliminary engineering goals. The determination of placing storm drainage systems, foundations and other design features is supported by this information, helping to avoid conflicts with existing utilities.
Quality Level A
(QL A) another SUE primary service and the highest quality level available, involves locating. Locating includes the use of nondestructive digging equipment at discrete, critical points to determine the precise horizontal and vertical position of underground utilities, as well as the type, size, condition, material, and other characteristics. Obtaining this kind of knowledge can aid the designer in accurately determining any utility conflicts or the need for adjustments in elevations to avoid having to relocate utilities. Overall, this service can yield more favorable bids due to contractor confidence of subsurface conditions.
